A home theater is sure to enhance the viewing experience of all those movies that come out on DVD, cable and satellite systems. At first, it can seem pretty confusing to set up your own home theater. It seems that everybody throws around the same words - and those words mean something different to each of them. But that shouldn't stop you from building your own dream theater system.

An example of this is the term home theater. While many people assume this means having the entire movie theater experience in their own home, most retailers have decided that it means having just a Dolby 5.1 surround sound system. I guess they consider it the same as going to a concert theater.

In its most basic context, a home theater means having a television and a surround sound system. You can get into a basic home theater for very little money by using your existing television and an inexpensive surround sound system.

Unfortunately, you will not get the ultimate home theater experience which requires a large, crystal clear viewing area and a sound proofed room that can take advantage of the high end sound systems available today.

The high end home theater consists of a specially-built, sound-proof room used to satisfy the strict requirements of the THX sound standard. The THX Reference Standard is the sound standard that defines what you hear at movie theaters.

Your home theater room must be sound proofed in order to keep noise from coming in to, or out of, the room. You want to maintain sound purity by keeping outside noises from interfering with your movie during the quietest scenes. At the same time, the action packed scenes can have high volumes and very low frequencies that will definitely disturb anyone else in the house if the room is not properly insulated.
